The 21st release of Lagavulin 12 Years Old as part of Diageo's Special Editions, is a whiskey that continues a long and acclaimed tradition. This year, a few extra components separate it from the packaging. First, the blending team selected whiskey casks that were particularly smoky—they measured the phenol content each time the barrels were filled, so they could pick out a particularly rich whiskey when needed. Second, they added some new oak-based whiskey to the mix, adding an extra layer of spice to the already heavily smoky spirit.
